Deutsche Wiedervereinigung und Einheit .Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR und Bundesrepublik Deutschland BRD, Maueröffnung, The night the Berlin wall came down.In the evening of the 9th November 1989 the East German government announces that it's borders won't be closed anymore to it's citizens.Within hours after the news had spread thousands of East-Germans were heading to the Bornholmer Strasse border crossing demanding to cross into West-Berlin.Unlike the celebrations of the following days and the photogenic removal of the wall-segments in the months to follow the situation in those first hours of the new freedom was tense and people on both sides didn't know what to expect or wether they would be allowed to return to East-Berlin once they had left for the West.The notourious East-German bordergourds seemed to be overwhelmed and surpriesed by the news and the developing situation.Especially when people from West-Berlin climbed the wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate and even tried to pass through the gate, East German police units tried to block the gate it wasn't clear that those hours were the beginning of the end of the German Democratic Republic. 1989 © 2009 Martin Specht / Agentur Focus
